Emergence is a creative photography collaboration with performance artist, Madison Sheward. When I created this installation in my studio in downtown Peterborough, I had in my mind’s eye a vision of my beautiful and amazing muse Madison Sheward moving through it. Madison has featured in several of my projects; most famously as the flying hero in the image “Flight”. I am so grateful for her time, talent and willingness to collaborate. But this time, I knew that Madison was a country away, performing on stage in different roles, so there was a good possibility that we would never get to create in the install.
The universe favoured us and this July, I was grateful to welcome Madison to my studio and the install. We had no preconceived ideas for this creative photography session. Madison put on a playlist and began to move through the space. As I watched her through my viewfinder, I was struck by how she seemed to emerge from the centre canopy for a few moments and then be drawn back in. This year is a year of change, of growth and of exploration for me, and I shared my thoughts with Madison. We imagined that the centre canopy was her world and that she was growing and breaking through into new spaces. What would that look like? How would that feel? Could we tell the story and share the feelings of what growth, change and emerging into a new phase in your life was like?
While Madison interpretively danced through the space, I alternated between slow shutter speeds, intentional camera movement – ICM and film to capture her expressions. We invite you to the story of Emergence.
